Michael Jackson has topped the list as being the most searched for term in 2009. Google, Yahoo and Microsoft's Bing all showed the 'King of Pop' as being the king of searches.

Other high entries on the Google list of the most searched in 2009 also included new sensation Lady Gaga. Social networking sites also dominated top search results with the likes of Facebook, Spanish social-networking site Tuenti and of course Twitter. Swine flu also registered a high ranking.

Yahoo said that other top searches on their search engine were The Twilight Saga, WWE, Megan Fox, pop princess Britney Spears, Naruto, popular TV show American Idol, the famous- for-being-famous Kim Kardashian, NASCAR and one of the hottest video games of the year RuneScape. Barack Obama's popularity has dwindled a little falling off the top 10 of Yahoo searches, the company said.

Microsoft's Bing also saw Michael Jackson and related information drawing in billions of queries. Jackson was followed by Twitter, Swine Flu, the Stock Market, Farrah Fawcett, Patrick Swayze, Cash for Clunkers, Jon and Kate Gosselin, Billy Mays and Jaycee Dugard as the Top Bing Trending Topics for 2009 list.
