Five nominees were announced Thursday for the top award of the Directors Guild of America (DGA)-- directorial achievement in feature film for 2009.

The nominees, in alphabetical order, are:

-- Kathryn Bigelow for "The Hurt Locker";

-- James Cameron for "Avatar";

-- Lee Daniels for "Precious: Based on the Novel 'Push' by Sapphire";

-- Jason Reitman for "Up in the Air";

-- Quentin Tarantino for "Inglorious Bastards."

Bigelow, Daniels and Reitman are first-time DGA feature film award nominees, while Cameron and Tarantino are second-time nominees.

Cameron won the award for "Titanic" in 1997, and Tarantino was previously nominated for "Pulp Fiction" in 1994.

"The DGA award is especially meaningful to directors because it is decided solely by their peers -- the men and women who have been in the same trenches and know exactly what goes into the crafting of a unique motion picture," said DGA President Taylor Hackford.

"The five nominees have each expressed an indelible vision that transported audiences to vivid vistas of cinematic art," Hackford said, "My heartiest congratulations to all of the nominees."

The winner of the DGA feature film award has gone on to win the Academy Award for best director all but six times since 1948. That most recently occurred in 2002, when Rob Marshall won the DGA honor for "Chicago" while Roman Polanski took the Oscar that year for "The Pianist."

The DGA winner will be named at the 62nd annual DGA Awards Dinner in Los Angeles on Jan. 30.
