The Delegation of the European Union to China on Friday launched the 6th edition of the annual European Union Film Festival in China at the Sanlitun Megabox cinema in Beijing.
A total of 22 feature films, with Chinese and English subtitles, will be screened at selected cinemas and cultural centres during November in Beijing, Chengdu, and Shenzhen.
"Although this festival is a great chance to showcase European films, its main purpose is to strengthen and expand "people-to-people" contacts, intercultural dialogue, mutual understanding and promote long-term cultural cooperation between the EU and China," said Markus Ederer, EU Ambassador to China.
To open the festival, there will be a screening of "Pilgrim Hill", a film about rural life in Ireland by young Irish director Gerard Barrett.
Attending the opening night, Gerard Barrett said: "It's a huge honour for me to bring my film Pilgrim Hill to China and personally introduce it. I hope it will be a glimpse into a part of Ireland and Europe that audiences might not have been aware of before. That for me is the magical thing about film, it can take you to places where you have never been or imagined."
Also present was Marten Klingberg, director of the Swedish film "Cockpit", who said: "If I can portray the desire for love and care in either a moving or an entertaining way, it makes me feel less lonely. Especially if I'm lucky to do so in another part of the world."
Screenings take place in Chengdu from 15th-22nd November; and Shenzhen from 22nd-29th November. Tickets are available at the theaters for no more than 40 RMB, screenings at Cultural Centers are free.
