Chinese audiences warmed to Takakura in 1978 after his movie "Kimi Yo Funnu no Kawa o Watare" was introduced to China. The movie was a big success and the actor became well-known to the Chinese people.

In 2004, Takakura cooperated with famous Chinese director Zhang Yimou in the movie "Riding Alone for Thousands of Miles" and once again won the hearts of Chinese audiences.

Takakura's representative works include the 1970 war film "Too Late the Hero" in which he played the cunning imperial Japanese Major Yamaguchi and the 1989 film "Black Rain," which gained him international recognition.

In late August, 2012, he appeared in the Japanese film "Anata e" (To You) after a six year hiatus.
