Shi Banyu, a father of three daughters, admitted he didn't have a close personal relationship with Stephen Chow outside of their work relationship. But he admired Chow and paid attention to news about him. "I think many people misunderstand him due to his bad Mandarin," Shi said. "Many controversies were just rumors, and wise men can tell that."

"Kung Fu Hustle 3D" was directed, co-written and co-produced by Stephen Chow. In the 3D version, the classic movie has been reworked and enhanced: the visual effects have been digitally 3D-enhanced and reconstructed while the sound effects have also been upgraded.

The original film grossed more than 170 million yuan on the Chinese mainland in 2004, HK$61.27 million in Hong Kong and US$17 million in the United States, making it one of the highest-grossing films in mainland and Hong Kong history. It grossed US$101 million worldwide, and was generally well-received by critics. It picked up six major awards at the Hong Kong Film Awards and five more awards at the Golden Horse Awards in Taiwan.

Since Chow has focused on his directing career and quit his acting career, Shi Banyu's voice has not been heard as Chow's "spokesman" since Chow's last science fiction film, "CJ7," in 2008, the last film in which Chow directed and also starred in the lead role.

Shi has also dubbed an additional 300 films and TV series through the years, including "Journey to the West" (1996) starring Dicky Cheung as the Monkey King. But Chow's films are still Shi's favorites and he is most proud of these works. Shi is also a guest professor at the Jilin Animation Institute.
