However, January also saw a few seat-packing Hollywood blockbusters released, including "The Hobbit" sequel and "Night at the Museum 3". The dates that these Hollywood films are screened are indeterminate and usually get decided closer to the time.
For Valentine's Day, Xu Jinglei's romantic drama "Somewhere Only We Know", and Eva Jin's "Crazy New Year's Eve" (the 2nd in a series) will screen. More surprising is "Wolf Totem", which will occupy an important position this Valentine's Day, as it aims to "frighten off" the more typical romantic films.
Films coming out at the tail end of this exceptionally long movie period will have to overcome a weary audience, and so they need to offer something exceptional to stand out.
Everybody is saying that this is an explosive year for Chinese-language movies, with movies made by the superstar directors Tsui Hark, John Woo and Jiang Wen all coming out. All the big stars like Chow Yun-Fat, Ge You, Jackie Chan and Zhou Xun will also all appear, with close to 20 stars all acting in more than two films each.
Before they were released it looked like the biggest box office results would come from three 3D films: the Ge You/Shu Qi starring "Gone with the Bullets," directed by Jiang Wen, the Zhang Hanyu starring "Taking of Tiger Mountain," directed by Tsui Hark, and the Zhang Ziyi/Takeshi Kaneshiro starring "The Crossing," directed by John Woo. These three directors' previous works have generally been hugely popular with the public and have done great business.
