Stephen Chow had planned to shoot "Journey to the West 2," however he was not satisfied with the initial script, so he changed his plan and chose to direct "Mermaid" instead. Tsui Hark was also interested in doing a "Journey to the West" movie, so Chow was willing to let Tsui try, reports said.

Chow has not responded to the rumors.

"Journey to the West: Conquering the Demons," was released in 2013, directed by Chow and starred Wen Zhang, Shu Qi, and Huang Bo. The movie grossed 1.244 billion yuan (US$203.5 million) on the Chinese mainland alone and ranks as the second biggest grossing Chinese film ever.

Many other film projects have cashed in on the Chinese ancient classic with the Monkey King as the leading role in this "Journey to the West mania."

"Kong," a US$50 million animated project by "Mulan" director Barry Cook and "Star Wars" conceptual designer Iain McCaig, is an adaptation of "Journey to the West" and will be finished in next three years. It is the first production by a new film company called Aquamen, and is being financed by Robin Li, chairman of Baidu.

A sequel to the 3D fantasy blockbuster "The Monkey King," directed by Cheang Pou-Soi and with an all-star cast including megastars Aaron Kwok and Gong Li is about to conquer the 2016 film market. The first "Monkey King" film grossed 1.06 billion yuan (US$170.8 million) during the 2014 Spring Festival season.

TV icon and veteran "Monkey King" actor Zhang Jinlai has said he will also make a Monkey King 3D movie in 2016.

There are also other "Journey to the West" adaptations on the way. And the upcoming animation "Monkey King: Hero is Back" is due to be released on Feb. 6, 2015.
