Zhang didn't specify who she was shouting at, her brother or the tabloid reporter. She later updated her blog with a handwritten letter from her parents Zhang Yuanxiao and Li Zhuosheng.

"We are Ziyi's father and mother. On the birthday party of our beloved daughter, Wang Feng received a 'yes' from Ziyi during his proposal," the parents said in the statement, "Their relationship has experienced many difficulties since day one. As witnesses to the romance, we congratulate Ziyi on her happiness and we are happy to have a fine new family member. We congratulate them!"

The parents also pointed out that somebody had taken advantage of the proposal to destroy Zhang and Wang: "Those rumors hurt and upset our family. We bless and support Ziyi and Wang Feng's love. Their life is nobody else's business. Those who want to use this to achieve their personal agenda, please stop!"

They added, "Ziyi and Wang Feng are now our children, and they are successful artists in society, working very hard and devoting themselves into pursuing high achievement in the arts, and helping and contributing to the prosperity of their country's cultural sector. As parents, we hope there will be no impact to their life and careers."

Zhang's sister-in-law Yin Xu retweeted several of Zhang's micro blog posts with a smiley on her own blog, indicating that she has no hard feelings towards the two. But Zhang's brother, who reportedly sees Zhang as his cash cow, has remained silent.

Who is behind the smear campaign is not yet known, but Wang Feng and Zhang Ziyi have been frequently subjected to a public backlash since both are infamous for their tumultuous past love affairs.

There has been a rumor that the team of Zhang's rival actress Fan Bingbing started all this, but Fan's spokesman later denied it. Rumor also had it that Wang's ex-wife Kang Zuoru and ex-girlfriend Ge Huijie will co-write a tell-all book about their relationship with Wang.

Kang vaguely denied the story by saying "please don't hurt anyone," but Ge, who is the mother of one of Wang's daughters, cynically wrote an online post on the day of the proposal, "Four-eyed (meaning Wang wore glasses) short-legged Wang proposed to Ms. Zhang. I really wish them happiness."

Hao Fang, a writer and music critic, said he could not understand the world's harsh judgment of the two. As a close friend of Zhang and Wang, Hao attended the party that day. "The family fights are totally made-up stories," he said, "When I talked to Ziyi, she cried for half an hour. She couldn't understand why so many people viciously attacked Wang Feng."

"I saw their sweet and happy moments, and I saw them as down to earth, and even lowering themselves down to the dust for this relationship," he continued. "They hold hands, listen to their hearts and move forward with tears in this unblessed love. But their past love affairs have always been dug up whenever they do something, as if those who have loved before cannot fall in love again."

"Please," he added, "Don't throw stones at those who sacrifice everything for love and have so many scars. Practise one more act of kindness, then there will be one thing fewer to resent."

After all the mess and controversies, Wang Feng's studio posted the following words on its official Weibo micro blog account: "Even thousands of rumors in the world cannot defeat this one phrase (from Zhang): 'yes, I do.'"
