Zhou also said she didn't include what she called the "biggest bombshells" in the book. However, she has saved related files and hidden three copies of her manuscript in three different places. She says that arrangements have been made for the files to be released publicly if anything horrible were to happen to her.

So far, Zhang Yimou has remained silent about the book. However, Zhang Weiping has dismissed it as a "total lie" full of malicious hype and says he plans to sue the writer.

Zhang Yimou's wife Chen Ting wrote a microblog post saying the book "truthfully reveals things about the director that have long been subjects of speculation while also showing both the merits and shortcomings of his personality and his passion for movies, which goes beyond everyone's imagination. People will form brand new ideas about Zhang Yimou's work, life and character. This is not a tabloid story."

After that, they made such box-office blockbusters as "House of Flying Daggers," "Curse of the Golden Flower" and "The Flowers of War." Zhang Weiping's film production company, New Pictures, founded in 1997, mainly invested in and produced Zhang Yimou's films.

When the two parted ways in 2012, Zhang Yimou signed a new deal with Le Vision Pictures and returned to the big screen with "Coming Home" in 2014. He will be directing a new Hollywood sci-fi movie focused on iconic Chinese landmark the Great Wall. Zhang Weiping is currently developing a new film adapted from a novel by writer Yu Hua.

"Fate: Lonely Zhang Yimou" has been published in mid-March.
