Nearly 1,500 international filmmakers, directors and actors, including ex-California governor and action movie star Arnold Schwarzenegger, attended the opening ceremony held at Beijing Yanqi Lake International Convention & Exhibition Center.

"I could not wait for China to become part of the international film market. Today, the Chinese market is one of the most important markets in the world, and it is only getting bigger," Schwarzenegger said in his address at the opening ceremony. "The Beijing International Film Festival is an important bridge to connect filmmakers from all over the world. I'm so happy to be a part of it."

A total of 15 films have been admitted to the competition for the festival's Tiantan Awards, the organizer said. More than 300 domestic and foreign films will be screened during the annual event.

French director Luc Besson will chair the Tiantan Awards jury, which also includes Robert Mark Kamen from the United States, South Korean auteur Kim Ki-duk, Brazilian director Fernando Meirelles, Russia's Fyodor Bondarchuk, Peter Chan from Hong Kong and Chinese actress Zhou Xun.
