Directors and stars who walked the red carpet before the opening ceremony included the Taviani brothers, Stanley Tong, Feng Xiaogang, Zhang Guoli, Zhang Jinlai, Annie Shizuka Inoh, Peter Ho, Bo-Bo Fung, Man Tat Ng, Ray Lui, Mark Chao, Ken Zhu, Cherrie Ying, Ni Ni, Wang Likun, Zeng Li and an number of foreign and domestic noted filmmakers and guests.

A screening of the Italian film "Wondrous Boccaccia" by the Taviani brothers marked the official opening of the festival. The film, which had its international premiere in Beijing, is based on the Italian literary masterpiece "The Decameron."

Film forums, the film carnival, film premieres, and other events are all featured on the annual film festival's schedule.

"People think of sunshine, beaches and beautiful women at the mention of Cannes International Film Festival, and we hope 'masters, mass and market' can become the symbols of the Beijing Film Festival," said Zhao Zhiyong, deputy secretary general of the festival's organizing committee.

The Beijing festival, co-organized by the Beijing Municipal Government and the State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television of China, will run through April 23.
