Universal's "Furious 7" remains the most popular movie in North America for the third consecutive weekend, setting a speed record of one billion dollars worldwide.

Starring Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson and the late Paul Walker, " Furious 7" topped the box office for the third weekend in a row with 29.1 million U.S. dollars and a domestic total of 294.4 million dollars, according to tracking firm Rentrak.

The seventh franchise passed the one-billion-dollar mark globally Friday after just 17 days of release, setting a new record for the fastest sprint to the box office milestone.

"Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2" debuted in second place with an estimated 24 million dollars in sales. Featured by Kevin James as a hotel security officer in Las Vegas, the film got terrible feedback on RottenTomatoes, with critics giving the sequel an astonishing 0 percent approval rating. Moviegoers gave the comedy a so-so "B-" grade on CinemaScore.

Universal's low budget horror film "Unfriended" debuted in third place, with a 16-million-dollar projection. Critics gave this newbie a 65 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes, while audiences rated it "C" on CinemaScore, which is respectable by horror film standards.

Rounding out the 10 most-popular movies this weekend in the United States and Canada were "Home" (10.3 million dollars), "The Longest Ride" (6.9 million), "Get Hard" (4.8 million), "Monkey Kingdom" (4.7 million), "Woman In Gold" (4.6 million), "The Divergent Series: Insurgent" (4.2 million) and "Cinderella" (3.9 million).
