The series' screenwriter Shi Xiaoke said in a previous interview that the flirtation between the two characters in the scene is supposed to trick the Japanese soldiers into not paying attention. Shi also said that in his original script, the grenade is hidden in Yin Hua's trouser pocket rather than in her crotch.

Series director Zhang Guoqing also countered Internet users' criticism, saying, "People should keep in mind [the characters'] identities: they are a thief and a gangster, and these roles have their own unique lifestyles. You can't judge our whole effort just by one scene."

But Xie Xiaohu, a film projects planner, told Beijing Daily that the controversial scene in "Fight Against Japanese Devils Together" and many other distasteful scenes and dialogues in other TV series are really deliberately made that way.

"They know these things will attract criticism, but they want to take this risk because they want more ratings and hype," Xie said. “The fact that these kinds of scenes and dialogues can get past the censors also indicates that there are loopholes in the supervision of TV production and broadcasting."

Jiao Fukun, a 95-year-old veteran of China's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, told Jiefang Daily that he has never watched any of the anti-Japanese-aggression TV series that have aired over the past several years. "The real war is far crueler than those on screen. Those silly TV series distort history and disrespect the martyrs."

Zhang Baoyi, the director of the Social Research Institute at Tianjin Academy of Social Science, said China should strengthen its supervision of historical dramas to avoid content that is in poor taste, and to get involved in showing the true face of history.

"The creators of TV series should improve their sense of social responsibility and artistic taste and quality. They should be serious with their creation. All people in society should be awed when they look back on real history," he said.
