Redmayne will star as a magizoologist Newt Scamander who writes a famous textbook that the students at Hogwarts including Harry, Ron and Hermione use to study.
The book was published in 2001 with the profits going towards the Red Nose Day charity fundraiser in the UK.
The plot of the book is set 70 years before the Harry Potter series and follows the adventures of Newt Scamander who travels the Wizarding World to document the creatures he encounters.
It had been thought for some time that Redmayne would take up the role. Earlier this year the actor won an Oscar and a Golden Globe for his role of Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything.
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is penned for release in November 2016.
