He said the reason they invited Li's participation is because she can represent what an oriental female hero is supposed to be as she has starred in Hollywood blockbusters such as "Transformers: Age of Extinction" and "Resident Evil 5."

"What a kick it has been to create our first Chinese female superhero, and an empowering one at that," said Lee. "It has been such a fun experience bringing to life an international female character, and the ability to do so has been different from anything we've ever done! I am thoroughly enjoying every minute of it."

Comic maestro Stan Lee is the former president and chairman of Marvel Comics. In 2001, he founded POW! Entertainment, which formed Stan Lee Global Entertainment in 2014 as a joint venture with a Hong Kong-based investor to capitalize and develop a number of Lee's original creations, including "Realm."

Fundamental Films is investing US$50 million into EuropaCorp's "Valerian" directed by Luc Besson and starring Dane DeHaan, Cara Delevingne and Rihanna. The company is also co-producing the upcoming "Transporter" reboot.
