"Doing film is more and more difficult," Chow confessed, "I have to work on the script for a long time, and I also have to work on a great many visual effects. So, the last three years were actually rather short and passed so fast. "

"The Mermaid," directed by Chow, stars Lin Yun, Deng Chao, Show Lo, Kris Wu Yifan, Zhang Yuqi, Li Shangzheng and Zhang Mei'e. The film will hit Chinese theaters on Feb. 8, 2016 in time for lunar Chinese New Year, also known as Spring Festival. It will have furious competition on the same day with blockbuster sequels also coming out, including "The Monkey King 2" by Cheang Pou-soi, "The Man From Macau" by Andrew Lau and Wong Jing and "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny" by Yuen Woo-ping.

However, Stephen Chow's reputation is set to survive the test, as his previous film, which also debuted during Spring Festival, "Journey to the West: Conquering the Demons" grossed 1.248 billion yuan (US$193.8 million) in China and US$215 million worldwide, making it one of the highest grossing Chinese-language films ever. It has held the box office champion record during the Spring Festival season for the previous three years and is likely to be surpassed by Chow's own "The Mermaid" next year.

In addition, after announcing "The Mermaid," Chow-produced "Journey to the West: Conquering the Demons 2" and announced it has finished shooting on Thursday morning and would enter post-production. Chow was supposed to direct the "Journey to the West" sequel, but he focused his efforts on "The Mermaid," and left the sequel to his fellow Hong Kong film wizard Tsui Hark. Their cooperation has already provoked many people's imagination.
