Global moviegoers went crazy for two debut films last weekend during the Christmas-New Year season, "Star Wars 7" and Chinese tomb raid blockbuster "Mojin" (寻龙诀). Both films broke a set of box office records.

"Star Wars: The Force Awakens," as expected, stormed the global box office and raked in US$247.9 million in its first three days in North America, including a record-breaking US$57 million in Thursday night previews and a record US$119 million for opening day. The film also made another US$281 million internationally for a massive US$524.9 million worldwide opening, topping "Jurassic World's" previous global record by US$4.1 million, according to tracking agency BoxOfficeMojo.com.

Thus, the new installment of the space opera saga also shattered the largest Friday, opening day, and single day box office records in North America, as well as highest per theater average, the biggest December weekend, the biggest IMAX opening, numerous local opening records in other countries and regions (such as the biggest opening weekend in the United Kingdom, Germany, Norway, Sweden, Australia, Russia and more) and many more records along the way, likely with more to come.

The global number for "Star Wars 7" may have been even higher if the film opened in the Chinese market, the world's second largest, last week. But Chinese audiences will not see "Star Wars" in the cinema until Jan. 9, 2016. A China premiere for the film will be held on Dec. 27 in Shanghai with director J.J. Abrams, producer Kathleen Kennedy and leading actors Daisy Ridley and John Boyega attending but the media is speculating on just how big it will be in China, considering the fact that China doesn't have a huge fan base or nostalgia as people in other markets do for the film franchise.
