Despite the global dominance of "Star Wars 7," Chinese audiences last weekend were cheering for their own domestic blockbuster, "Mojin - The Lost Legend" by Wuershan, a fantasy adventure movie adapted from the best-selling tomb raid novel series "Ghost Blows out the Light."
According to Wanda Pictures, "Mojin - The Lost Legend" earned 600 million yuan (US$92.64 million) in just three days. It became the No. 2 movie internationally behind "Star Wars 7" and set new Chinese box office records for highest domestic 3D film midnight preview with 8.7 million yuan (US$1.34 million), the biggest opening day for films screened during New Year season with 170 million yuan (US$26.24 million), and the biggest single day record for a domestic 3D film with 230 million yuan (US$35.51 million).
Another Chinese film "Surprise – Journey to the West" generated 148.6 million yuan (US$22.94 million) and came in at No.2 in China and No. 3 internationally. With its massive preview a week ago, the comedy has accumulated 263 million yuan (US$40.6 million) in total in the Chinese market.
