Which music band grabs the most attention in China now? The most unlikely but de facto answer is "Sunshine," a newly launched group of five adolescents, namely Abby, Cindy, Dora, Nancy and Cheryl.

Despite their mediocre looks and sometimes offbeat singing style, the group has become an "overnight" success in the past several days, attracting 160,000 followers on Weibo, China's Twitter-like microblog platform, and its name and music video have become hot keywords on the platform's real-time search list.

At a time when countless talented young men and women are scrambling for relevance in a competitive world, its rise to fame seems all the more baffling.

Some compare it to TFBOYS, a group of teenage boys famous for their cute looks and beautiful voices who were also mocked by a nitpicking audience for allegedly being childish.

However, fans of the boys group are irritated, because they think the girls cannot compare with their idols who are much more professional in singing and more good-looking.

"Followers" of Sunshine are either showing a sense of fun by ridiculing the group members or seeing the funny aspects of their counterparts mocking them.

A netizen tweeted on Weibo, saying that "I was wrong to have mocked TFBOYS" and promised never to do so again.

Some even take the initiative to airbrush the girls' photos such as making their faces smaller and eyes bigger, taking more care than they would in retouching their own selfies.
