Veteran director Hu Mei will helm the project, entitled "The Story of the Stone," an alternative translation of the 18th century classic novel.

Hu, 59, a Fifth Generation director in China, was the director of hugely popular historical television series “Yongzheng Dynasty,” which also received critical acclaim in Chinese mainland. She has since directed a number of hit television series, including "The Emperor in Han Dynasty" (2005), "Qiao's Grand Courtyard" (2006), and "Cao Cao" (2014).

The director said there are many life insights, rich cultural and social connotations in the world of "A Dream of Red Mansions" and she wanted to make a film to share the vision. "It has been my dream to make a film out of 'A Dream of Red Mansions'," Hu said.

She intended to direct "The Story of the Stone" as a trilogy but said that she will make the first installment as best as she can, then she and her crew will decide if it is the correct approach after receiving response from film critics and the film market.

Hu recruited a starry A-team for the project she prepared for six years. He Yanjiang, her long-time partner and screen writer of "The Emperor in Han Dynasty" and "Qiao's Grand Courtyard," to write the script for "A Dream of Red Mansions" film.
