Zhao Xiaoding, Chinese photographer and cinematographer known for his works in Zhang Yimou's classics such as "Hero," "House of Flying Daggers," "The Flowers of War" and "The Great Wall," will serve as visual director for Hu.

Huo Tingxiao, veteran production designer and art director also known for his works in Zhang Yimou's classics, will be art director for "The Story of the Stone." Veteran cinematographer Chen Dan will take the job of cinematography director, while musical director and composer for the film will be Ye Xiaogang, chairman of the Chinese Musicians' Association and one of China's most active and most famous composers of contemporary classical music.

As one of China's Four Great Classical Novels, "A Dream of Red Mansions" is generally acknowledged to be the pinnacle of Chinese fiction, involving wealthy aristocratic families as well as romantic rivalry and friendship among the three leading characters Jia Baoyu, Lin Daiyu and Xue Baochai. It is believed to be semi-autobiographical, mirroring the rise and fall of author Cao Xueqin's own family and of the Qing Dynasty.

There were several film and TV adaptations in the past, and the 1987 CCTV version was outstanding and considered as an all-time classic gaining enormous popularity for its music, cast, and plot adaptation. The 36-episode TV series is regarded by many within China as being a near-definitive adaptation of the novel.

Hu's new film adaptation will be much different from the past ones, and will be full of youth and energy, she said. She and producers initiated a global hunt for talents, seeking young actors below 20 years old. The director said in the original novel, the leading characters are below 20 years old, so her film version will be loyal to the original story and be even younger.

Any Chinese in the world who have acting talents and time can submit their CVs to the official website hlm.haigang18.com. Those selected will receive 100-hour of acting training and another 100-hours of Chinese traditional culture training.

Kingdom Film, Beijing Universe Starlight Culture Media, MaxTimes, Beijing Film Academy, CITIC Guoan, SynCaptial and China Movie Channel will co-produce the film, which is set for a 2018 release.
