Only two GM agricultural products are allowed for commercial cultivation and circulation -- cotton and papaya; other GM vegetables, such as tomatoes, peppers, and sweet potatoes, are prohibited from entering the market, said Chen Xiwen, a member of the CPPCC Standing Committee and deputy head of the Central Rural Work Leading Group, on March 6 at a CPPCC press conference.

Commenting on illegal cultivation of GM products, Minister of Agriculture Han Changfu said that they only represented isolated and rare acts committed by individuals, and that there is no large-scale cultivationof GM products. He stressed that illegal cultivation is controllable and will be punishable by law.
