Calls for Enhanced Cross-Straits Relations

A senior official said the Chinese mainland should place more hope in its Taiwanese compatriots in continuing to oppose pro-independence forces.

During an inspection tour of Jiangsu and Jiangxi provinces, State Councilor Tang Jiaxuan said the mainland must enhance relations with the people of Taiwan by expanding exchanges and furthering cooperation.

"Mainland governments at different levels should take care of and protect the legitimate interests and rights and safety of our Taiwan compatriots who are engaging in various investment and exchange activities on the mainland," said Tang.

He viewed Taiwanese people as a major force who would fight against the separatists to maintain China's integrity.
