Li Ying Strikes Gold at World Judo Championships

Li Ying won the women's 52kg category to give China its second gold medal at the ongoing World Judo Championships in Cairo, Egypt on Saturday.

Li, competing in her first world championships, relied on her fast attacking to beat Olympic silver medalist Yuki Yokosawa of Japan in the final.

"Our traditional strength lies in heavyweight categories, we are weak in lightweight categories, so Li's victory is more inspiring," said Xiong Fengshan, general secretary of the Chinese Judo Association.

While China was in a celebratory mood, judo powerhouse Japan had a gold-less day but collected two silvers.

China won its first gold on the opening day of the world championships when Tong Wen powered to victory in the women's over-78kg category on Thursday.
