Police Seize 84 kg of Heroin

Chinese police have cracked down on a major transnational drug smuggling ring in southwest China's Yunnan Province, seizing 84 kg of heroin, sources with local public security bureau said Friday.

Police in Baoshan, a city in western Yunnan, confiscated 242 pieces of heroin hidden in a truck passing through a border checkpoint on June 1. All domestic and foreign smugglers, including one from neighboring Myanmar, involved in the drug trafficking case were detained.

China declared a "People's War on Drugs" in April, appealing to the public to educate traffickers about the possible consequences and to help addicts receive treatment. According to the Ministry of Public Security, Chinese police arrested 67,000 people on drug charges last year and seized 10.8 tons of heroin and 2.7 tons of methamphetamine.
