HK Students Win Medals in China's Math Olympiad

A team of eight Hong Kong secondary school students scored one gold, five silvers and two bronzes at the China Western Mathematical Olympiad 2005 held in Chengdu, Sichuan province.

Of them, Tsoi Yun-pui is the first Hong Kong team member to win three golds in a row at cross-territory mathematical competitions. He was victorious in last year's and this year's events, and in the International Mathematical Olympiad held in July.

The Chengdu event was hosted by the China Mathematical Society Olympiad Committee, related education bodies and secondary schools, from Nov. 4 to 8. A total of 92 mathematically talented secondary students from 23 teams participated.

Hong Kong, China's southmost province of Hainan and Kazakhstan were specially invited to the Olympiad.

The team members were selected from the International Mathematical Olympiad -- Hong Kong Preliminary Contest organized by the Support Measures for the Exceptionally Gifted Students Scheme.

Established by the Education & Manpower Bureau in late 2000, the scheme provides structured enhancement programs in mathematics, science and other learning areas to help students develop their potential to the fullest.
