China's entry into the World Trade Organization (WTO) will inject vigor into the organization and is expected to help establish a fair and just world economic order, Uruguayan parliamentary leaders said Monday in Montevideo.
They made the remarks while meeting Li Peng, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC) of China, who is on a three-day visit to Uruguay.
Acting President of the National Congress of Uruguay Alejandro Athcugarry Bonomi told Li that his visit to Uruguay will surely further promote the development of Uruguay-China ties.
Uruguay is willing to make joint efforts with China to make contributions towards the development of human society, said Athcugarry.
When China enters the WTO, it will surely abide by the organization's rules and carry out its duties while enjoying its due rights, said Li, adding the admission of China into the WTO will benefit the organization itself.
He pointed out that world political multi-polarization and economic globalization are two trends of development. For developing countries, economic globalization is a challenge as well as an opportunity. The WTO should pay more attention to developing countries' rights and interests.
The two sides also expressed willingness to further enhance exchange and cooperation between the parliaments of the two countries.
Other Uruguayan parliamentary officials attending the meeting were Acting President of Chamber of Deputies Ruben Obispo Bueno, and chairmen of the foreign affairs committees of the two chambers of parliament.
On Monday afternoon, the acting mayor of Montevideo, Ernesto de los Campos, granted Li Peng the title of Honorable Citizen of City, saying it represents the good wishes from Montevideo citizens to the Chinese people.
