Chinese Premier Meets Mexican Foreign Secretary

China's entry into the World Trade Organization (WTO) offers new opportunities for trade and economic cooperation with Mexico, Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji said Monday.

During his meeting with Mexican Secretary of Foreign Relations Jorge G. Castaneda in Beijing, Premier Zhu said two-way trade and economic cooperation have had great results since the two countries established diplomatic relations 30 years ago.

He said both countries have seen increasing investment from the other side, and Mexico has become one of the largest trade partners of China in Latin America.

He said since China's entry to the WTO, it is opening its market wider to the outside world, bringing new opportunities for trade and economic cooperation between the two countries.

Castaneda said that he believed with joint effort, trade and economic cooperation will prosper.

He noted that over the past decades, bilateral links developed smoothly in areas such as politics, trade, culture, science and technology. In recent years, the leaders of the two countries kept regular contact, pushing forward bilateral relations.

Zhu said he appreciates Mexico's adherence to the "One China" stance. He said the Chinese government has always attached importance to its relations with Mexico. China is ready to expand bilateral cooperation in all fields and lift bilateral relations to a higher level, he said.

Castaneda said Mexican President Vicente Fox Quesada's two visits to China last year strongly demonstrated the importance Mexico puts on developing relations with China and the increasingly closer and more fruitful relations between the two countries.

He said Mexico and China share much in common in the political field and extensive common interest in trade and economic relations.
