Renowned Scholars from China's Mainland Honored
Seven renowned scholars from the Chinese mainland were honored by the Hong Kong Polytechnic University Thursday, as they have accepted invitation to present series of lectures and seminars in the university this year.

The university has invited a total of more than 50 prominent Chinese scholars of international repute to take part in the annual "Distinguished Chinese Visiting Scholars Scheme since 1994," Poon Chung-kwong, the university's president, said at a special presentation ceremony.

This year the scheme enters its ninth year and the program continues to achieve its well-recognized objectives of fostering friendship and partnership between the university and distinguished scholars as well as enhancing institutional collaboration and exchange, Poon said.

Scholars honored under this year's scheme include Wu Wenjun, research fellow of the Institute of System Science of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Xing Fuyi, professor for Central China Normal University, Yu Xuying, professor for Xiamen University, and Chen Yong, research professor from China Seismological Bureau.

Also included are Cheng Jinpei, vice-minister of the Ministry of Science and Technology, Liu Yuanzhang, research professor of the Academy of Mathematics and System Science under the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Gu Yudong, professor for hand surgery of Fudan University.

Ji Peiding, commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Hong Kong, officiated Thursday's ceremony and praised the scheme as positive on promoting academic exchange and collaboration between Hong Kong higher educational institutions and their counterparts in the mainland.
