Wang Yu has booked one spot in the second round in Beijing on Tuesday as all seeds survived first-round tests at the China Open ATP tournament except top seed Rafael Nadal awaiting a Wednesday matchup and fifth seed Dominik Hrbaty having announced Monday to withdraw due to injury.
First round matches of the US$500,000 ATP tournament should have concluded Tuesday, but Nadal's China Open debut was postponed to Wednesday as the world No. 2's counterpart Wang Yeu-Tzuoo had yet to show up here due to private business in Turkey.
The 19-year-old Spaniard was originally scheduled to kick off his China Open campaign on Monday with five first-round encounters in upper quarters being played on Monday and other 10 on day two.
China's wildcard Sun Peng rallied to pull back one set 7-5 after losing the first 6-4, but failed to launch a later comeback after Japanese Toshihide Matsui, the lucky loser entering the main draw with Hrbaty pulling out, breaking away to jump to lead 4-0 and to win the decider 6-4.
Wang Yu nipped 7-6, 6-1 against qualifier Luka Gregorc to make it through to the second round earlier the day, while the only Chinese making the main draw from qualifying round, Zeng Shaoxuan was crushed in another evening draw by Argentine upstart Guillermo Coria who proved himself too powerful by winning 6-2, 6-1 in just 58 minutes.
Fourth seed Thomas Johansson made short work of his first round matchup against compatriot Jonas Bjorkman, beating the 81st-ranked Swede 6-4, 6-3 in a match resumed after two hours delay due to rain fall.
The 15th-ranked Johansson will next play Jarkko Nieminen late on Wednesday after the Finn eased past Germany's Rainer Schuettler6-4, 6-2.
David Nalbandian, seeded third, takes qualifier Amir Hadad after the Argentine overcame Kristian Pless from Denmark 6-3, 7-6 (2) and Israeli Hadad beat Belgian Dick Norman 7-5, 7-6 (5).
Seventh-seeded Russian Mikhail Youzhny also claimed breezy win, beating qualifier Nathan Healey from Australia 7-5, 6-4. He will meet Thailand's Danai Udomchoke who rallied past Noam Okun of Israel 7-6 (5), 3-6, 6-4.
With the victory in ease over Chinese qualifier Zeng, Coria stepped closer for a possible matchup against seventh seed Youzhnyas the second seed next plays Matsui in the second round.
"The match is not as easy as it looks like, " said Coria at a post-match press conference. "My fitness is not that good these days. I'm so tired recently."
"I desire for a good result here in order to earn more points to qualify for the Masters Cup later this year in Shanghai. Spanish powerhouses, such as (Rafael) Nadal and (Carlos) Ferrero have made the tournament difficult to win, but I'll go all out forit," he added.
Zeng, who beat Matsui on Monday to qualify for the main draw, committed five and seven unforced errors respectively in set 1-2, while the Argentine played a nearly perfect showdown.
The world number six, who reached the quarter-finals at the US Open, a hardcourt grand slam concluded last weekend, broke Zeng at as early as the second game and the first server for the 921st-ranked Chinese.
Holding 2 match points on 40-15 while leading 5-0 in the second set, Coria, 23, who moved Zeng around the court throughout the match, surprisingly missed his winning chance to Zeng's die-for-it attitude before the 24-year-old Chinese pulled back one point to 5-1 after forcing five deuces.
One of the few highlights from Zeng has been performed earlier in the match. Trailing 4-0 in the first set, Zeng broke the unbeatable Argentine with placement shots after saving three game points. He then managed to hold on his server with a smart flick risk, but failed to repeat the sudden outburst again.
Zeng had been the only Chinese coming up from the qualifying round, while wildcard Wang Yu made the next round.
