Zhang Yuan's Maiden Film Mama to Screen at Venice

Chinese filmmaker Zhang Yuan's maiden film Mama will be screened at A Retrospective Section on Chinese Film from 1934 to 1990 at the Venice Film Festival.

A party was held in the Poly Building on Monday night, attended by the former underground director and lead actor Huang Haibo.

This year's Venice Film Festival has established a section called The Secret History of Asian Cinema to celebrate the centennial of Chinese Films. Other films to screen in this session include Springtime in A Small Town and Sisters on Stage.

This film Mama, which was shot in 1989, dealt with a subject that was taboo, namely, unmarried mothers.
