China Pledges to Advance Child Development

China would continue to support and expand the cooperation with United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) to contribute to the regional and international child development, Vice Premier Wu Yi said.

Wu made the remark when she met with Ann Veneman, UNICEF executive director here Tuesday.

Wu spoke positively on the the important role the UNICEF plays to promote international child development. But she also noted an imbalance existing in China's social and economic development.

"Chinese government always attaches great importance to the growth of woman and child and is endeavoring to resolve the urgent issues that restrict the woman and child development", Wu said, expressing the hope that China could establish good cooperation with concerned international organizations, including the UNICEF, in this field.

Veneman highlighted her appreciation to the remarkable progress China has made in the course of child development, especially on issues of the HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment and the child protection.

She promised that the UNICEF will coordinate with China's effort and expand the cooperation with the country within the arena.
