Wen Calls for Production Safety

Premier Wen Jiabao called for production safety and listened to a report on last year's audit results on Wednesday when he chaired the standing committee meeting of the State Council.

According to the meeting, China's current production safety remains stark. Large deadly accidents have occurred frequently in coal mines and other key industries and have brought great losses of life and property.

The meeting suggested seven measures to curb coal mine accidents and a safety development plan.

Among these measures, it said efforts have to be made to close down collieries and pits that do not have adequate safety standards, standardize and streamline coal resources, improve control of coal mining development projects, and enhance the management of mining operation as well as law enforcement in mining enterprises.

The report of the 2004 central budget operation and other fiscal auditing were also released at the meeting.
