The coastal city of Xiamen, in east China's Fujian Province, registered a 64.83 billion yuan (US$7.83 billion) gross domestic product in 2002, a year-on-year increase of 15.5 percent.
The city's total industrial output value reached 102.5 billion yuan (US$12.39 billion), up 26.4 percent from the previous year, according to the city statistics bureau.
Overseas-funded enterprises played a key role in industrial development, with their combined output value topping 86.7 billion yuan (US$10.48 billion) or 84.5 percent of the city's total industrial output value.
In addition, high-tech enterprises also became a major driving force behind the city's industrial growth. The output value of 41 key high-tech enterprises, involving production of computers, mobile phones, color TV sets and other high-tech products, reached52.58 billion yuan (US$$6.35 billion) in 2002, 43.9 percent more than the previous year.
Xiamen, which is one of China's five special economic zones, also registered a foreign trade volume of 15.18 billion US dollars for 2002, a drastic 37.08 percent increase from the previous year. The city's products have been exported to more than 180 countries and regions worldwide, with Japan, the United States, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Singapore being the leading export markets.
