Officials from 6 countries to meet in Paris on Iran nuke issue
Adjust font size:

Political directors from the six countries will meet in Paris on Sunday to have talks on Iran's nuclear issue, the U.S. State Department said in a statement Wednesday.

"In Paris on Dec. 1 (U.S.) Under Secretary (Nicholas) Burns will participate in a P5 +1 political directors meeting to discuss the text of the next United Nations Security Council Chapter VII sanctions resolution on Iran," the statement said.

"P5+1" refers to the five permanent members of the U.N. Security Council, or the United States, Russia, China, France and Britain, plus Germany.

Pushed by the United States, two U.N. Security Council resolutions have been passed to punish Iran for its defiance over its nuclear program. The United States wants a third U.N. Security Council resolution for harsher punishments for Iran.

Washington has accused Iran of trying to develop nuclear weapons under the cover of a civilian nuclear program. Iran has denied U.S. charges and insisted that its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes only.
