More and more patents are being applied for in China, with the total number standing at three million last year. This places China among the world leaders in quantity of patent applications.

The State Intellectual Property Office says the number of applications for Innovation Patent and Patent of Practical New Pattern led the world in 2003.

These statistics indicate that China's patent system is playing an increasingly important role in promoting technical innovation.
