New Zealand's top civil defense official will be sharing the experience of last year's devastating Christchurch earthquake at the Fifth Asia Ministerial Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction in Indonesia next week.

Civil Defence Minister Chris Tremain, who will attend the conference hosted by the National Agency for Disaster Management of Indonesia and supported by the United National International Strategy for Disaster Reduction, said Friday that nothing had tested New Zealand's disaster management framework like the Feb. 22 quake that killed 185 people.

"The conference provides an opportunity to share New Zealand's recent experiences in disaster response and discuss the lessons learnt," Tremain said in a statement.

"I will be stressing the importance of communities and organizations investing in risk reduction, being prepared and having an effective emergency plan for themselves."

New Zealand would also reaffirm its commitment to the United Nations Hyogo Framework for Action plan for disaster management and highlight aid investment in disaster risk reduction in Asia and the Pacific, he said.
