Adjust font size:

An earthquake measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale struck remote Qinghai Province in northwest China at 6:15 p.m. Monday, the China Earthquake Administration said.

There were no immediate reports of casualties or property losses.

The epicenter was located at 37.7 degrees north and 95.9 degrees east at a depth of 10 km.

The quake, three days after another 6.4-magnitude quake hit the region, was felt in Golmud City, 160 km away from the epicenter and in Delingha City, the capital of Haixi prefecture 152 km away, said the Qinghai Provincial Seismological Network.

More than 2,890 aftershocks had been registered near the epicenter of the 6.4-magnitude quake in the Da Qaidam (also known as Dachaidan) district in the Haixi prefecture, of which three were measured above 5 on the Richter scale.

Monday's quake was the strongest aftershock so far.
