The People's Bank of China raised its benchmark one-year interest rates by 0.25% on Oct. 20, the first time since the financial crisis almost three years ago, Xinhua reports. This surprise rate hike reflects the government's concern over the mounting inflation pressure and the soaring property market.
In the wake of the economic recovery, China has tried to limit new credit issued by banks and introduced measures to discourage speculation in the property sector. One explanation for the rate hike, argues the Financial Times, is the September inflation figures due to be published later this week could be higher than expected, while the Q3 growth would also exceed forecasts. China seeks to achieve a growth rate of around 10% and about 3% inflation in 2010.
International commodities fell in response. Crude oil plummeted 4.3% to $79.49 per barrel, its biggest single-day drop since June, while gold tumbled 2.8% to $1,333 an ounce.
