Dirty battle [By Zhai Haijun/China.org.cn]

U.S. elections are always muddy and dirty. The intensity of stench and smear often get nastier as the polling day draws nearer. The opponents use every below the belt trick to win the Oval Office….Well! The latest U.S. presidential race has everything from the past and present. It also offers glimpses of future contests.

Donald Trump would hardly have had such a thing in mind when he was extending his wily hands (in his own words) on whatever woman he wanted. One feels disgust for a man who had no respect for his image when he was abusing his position of authority on females under his clout.

As Election Day nears, the number of woman allegedly victimized by his wild instinct is mounting. There are already a dozen. And they are the ones who have the courage to speak up.

Some pro-Trump folks may ask why they've kept silent for years.

There is no easy answer to this. We all know countless women in the world are daily harassed and a vast majority of them keeps mum. The reasons for it are as many as you can think of.

But those speaking up even after several years need support and a system of justice to probe their claims. Of course, the person accused of sexually abusing or insulting them also deserves justice if he has been wrongly accused or his opponents are trying to stage his downfall.

The timing of the victims accusing the presidential front runner is crucial. It will surely hurt Trump, though it's hard to know how many percentage points he's lost since the sex-talk tape incident and the barrage of allegations started.

Hillary Clinton has also suffered, but from a different nemesis -- emails sent from a private server when she was secretary of the state. It showed her crass carelessness and disregard for the exalted position. Does it render her unfit for a job demanding even more care? The FBI probe did not say anything that can stop her way to the White House.

But like Trump being followed by her "victim females," Hillary emails are following her close at heels as the election date comes closer. The FBI says it has found more emails which need analysis. Those in Hillary's camp are upset at the sheer timing of the new claim. She is known and also ridiculed by Trump as "establishment lady." If correct, then who is trying to spoil her chances?

The FBI has handed Trump a wild card so close to November 8 when American people will choose the new leader. He has already called the emails issue bigger than Watergate, which swept away President Richard Nixon.

Even without the frailties of both Clinton and Trump, the campaign was dirty, even by American standards. Some of the speeches by Trump will haunt the country for a long time to come. His bashing of Muslims and praise for Russian leader Putin drop hints about the future brand of U.S. politics.

Trump, despite opposition by the leading Republicans, won popular support in the primaries. No matter who wins the final race, future politicians may more than often use his methods and tactics to get immediate dividends.

The tragic part is that once the elections are over, I fear that there will be hardly anyone left to talk about all those unfortunate females or private sever emails. Winner takes all.
