Storm On The Sea of Galilee |
Value: $ 300 million
Time: March, 1990
Venue: Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston
Storm On The Sea of Galilee, Rembrandt's only known seascape and The Concert, one of only 36 Vermeer paintings known to exist, disappeared in the early hours of 18 March 1990 from the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston, along with two other works by Rembrandt, five sketches by Degas, a Manet painting, a landscape by Flink and - bizarrely - a bronze finial from a Napoleonic battle flag. Exactly 20 years on, the Gardner heist remains one of the great crime mysteries.
