Thousands of works in Iraq's National Museum, one of the 'Top 8 art thefts in the world' by China.org.cn.
Iraq's National Museum

Value: inestimable

Time: between March and April in 2003

Venue: Iraq's National Museum

The National Museum of Iraq is a museum located in Baghdad, Iraq. It contains precious relics from Mesopotamian civilization, thousands of which were looted in 2003 during the Iraq War. The National Museum said that 15,000 items were stolen and that up to 6,000 have been returned.

Iraq's National Museum officially reopened in February 2009. Thousands of works from its collection of antiquities and art -- some of civilization's earliest objects -- remain lost.

Because of the archaeological riches of Mesopotamia, the museum's collections are amongst the most important in the world. It contains important artifacts from the over 5,000 year long history of Mesopotamia.
