The Pearl River Delta Economic Rim is an economic region consisting of nine major cities along the Pearl River in Guangdong Province, namely, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Zhuhai, Foshan, Huizhou, Zhaoqing, Jiangmen, Zhongshan and Dongguan. It also includes the Hong Kong and Macao special administration regions. Presently, it has formed three sub-regional development belts, known as Guangzhou-Foshan-Zhaoqing, Shenzhen-Dongguan-Huizhou, and Zhuhai-Zhongshan-Jiangmen. This highly internationalized metropolis is one of the major powerhouses for China's economic growth.

Since China adopted the reform and opening-up policy in 1978, the region has become the fastest growing part of China and the manufacturing hub of both China and the world, attracting a huge amount of investment from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. It's focused on production of products such as garments, toys, consumer goods, plastics and electronics. New industrial pillars, such as petrochemical and electrical machinery, are also taking shape.
