Located in Xi'an, the capital city of Shaanxi Province, Lintong District is teeming with hot springs. Lintong, thought to be the birthplace of China's spa tradition and culture, is home to the renowned Huaqing Hot Spring, or Huaqing Palace. The resort lies some 30 kilometers east of Xi'an, with the gorgeous Li Mountain as its backdrop. The development and utilization of springs here can be traced back some 6,000 years, making it China's first spring resort.

Endowed with four natural hot springs with a constant year-round water temperature of around 44°C, the spring site was originally a winter imperial attraction favored by those emperors who established their capitals in Shaanxi during the five feudal dynasties including Zhou, Qin, Han, Sui and Tang. Huaqing Palace, the temporary palace built in 723 by the Tang Emperor Xuanzong (685-762) for himself and his beloved consort Yang Yuhuan, made the springs even more famous. The palace has also been mentioned by many famous Chinese poets and writers throughout the ages.
