In Aug. 2011, Jose Antonio Camacho moved to China to become the 26th manager of the Chinese National Team after continuous defeats earned him a bad reputation abroad. A 3-year-long contract with China brings Camacho and his entourage an annual salary of about €4.5 million (after taxes), including €2.8 million for him and him alone, a staggering 25 times that of his predecessor Gao Hongbo, a Chinese native. The deal made him the most expensive coach in Chinese soccer history. China failed to qualify for the 2014 FIFA World Cup in 2011 however, counting only one win in four games.

Despite him being a formerly well-known Spanish player, Camacho has shown no particular talent over the course of his 22-year managerial career. In the summer of 1998, he became the manager of Real Madrid, where he played from 1974 to 1989. He was actually forced to resign within only 22 days, the shortest tenure for a head coach in the club's history. He also received a lot of critique for being a mediocre boss when coaching the Spanish National Team from 1998 to 2002.
