In March 1982, Song Liping who was a student at the Renmin University of China and at that time was selected to study abroad at the state's expense. After obtaining her masters' degree in Economy and Business Administration in Japan and the U.S. respectively, Song took up working for Japan's leading securities company --Nomura Securities- in 1988. Three years later, she returned to China and became a teacher at Renmin University.

In 1992, Song participated in establishing the China Securities Regulatory Commission, and then worked there as director of the Department of Market Supervision, the Department of Public Offering Supervision, and the Department of Intermediary Supervision. In March of 2002, Song moved to Shenzhen Stock Exchange and became the company's general manager in 2008. In November 2012, Song was named an alternate member of the 18th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC).
