After graduating from China Foreign Affairs University in 1985, Li Yifei went to America to pursue further studies and obtained a master's degree from Baylor University. After receiving her master's, Li moved to New York to work for the UN, where she worked in the public information department prior to producing and hosting a program called "The UN Calls for Asia."

In 1993, Li returned to China and became general manager of Burson-Marsteller China the following year. Six years later, she moved to Viacom China and served as managing director of MTV Networks- Greater China. Since August 2009, Li has been managing director of GLG China of GLG Partners. She became chairwoman of the MAN Group China in October 2011.
