China's National Language Resources Monitoring and Research Center recently published its list of the top 10 Chinese internet slang phrases of the year. These terms mirror Chinese people's experiences in 2020.

The center examined language used across online forums, news portals and social media platforms, including around 300,000 posts and more than 300 million Chinese characters.

Let's have a look at the top 10 Chinese internet slang expressions of 2020:

# Counter-marchers 逆行者

This expression came to prominence during the COVID-19 outbreak to describe the courageous medical workers who "marched" to the frontlines during the crisis. In 2020, health care workers who risked their lives to fight the coronavirus outbreak were hailed as "counter-marchers" by Chinese journalists and internet users alike.
