"The first cup of milk tea in fall" started trending on Chinese social media in September, with over 400,000 netizens discussing the topic on China's Twitter-like Weibo. Many also posted screenshots online showing money sent by friends — with which to buy milk tea — as well as photos of themselves holding a cup.

According to the traditional Chinese calendar, the fall equinox was on Sept. 22 this year. Sending a loved one money for their "first cup of milk tea in fall" became a popular way for people to show their love or affection to friends and family.
