Chinese netizens use this new phrase as a casual way to call friends or strangers online, and is especially common between girls and women.

The word first appeared on Kuaishou early this year, when a popular livestreamer with more than 3 million followers wrongly pronounced the term "jiemei," meaning "sister" in English, as the close-sounding "jimei" because of her strong Hebei accent.
